What Color Diamond Is The Most Expensive?

When we think of diamond colors, we often think of the classic white diamond we all know. However, there are a number of different colors of diamonds and even variations within the same colors. These fancy color diamonds are beautiful, much less common than white diamonds, and therefore, much more expensive.

What Color Diamond Is the Most Expensive?

The price of diamonds is determined by their carat weight, clarity, cut, and color, but most importantly, supply and demand. Red diamonds are the rarest of all fancy color diamonds. In fact, red diamonds are so rare that only around 20-30 have been found and documented in the entire world, with most of them just 0.50 carats or less.

The most famous red diamond is the Moussaieff Red, a 5.11 carat trillion-cut diamond found in the early 1990s in Brazil. This diamond is the largest red diamond in the world today and is currently valued at around $20 million. Experts say that if the Moussaieff Red ever appears at an auction, it will crush the current record held by "The Pink Star" as the highest amount ever paid for a diamond.

What Makes Red Diamonds So Rare?

Red diamonds are so rare because of the way they are formed. Unlike other colors of diamonds which get their color from impurities like nitrogen or boron, red diamonds get their color from a structural deformity called "plastic deformation." This deformity is caused by the immense pressure exerted on the carbon atoms that make up the diamond deep underground. Over the course of millions of years, this pressure can turn some of the carbon atoms into "defects" that absorb certain wavelengths of light, causing the diamond to appear red. Scientists still do not fully understand the exact process, which is why red diamonds are so rare and valuable.

Evaluating the Quality of Red Diamonds

Fancy diamonds are graded just like colorless diamonds: by looking at the 4Cs of the stone. However, red diamonds are evaluated chiefly based on their color from the least to most saturated, as  faint red, very light red, light red, fancy light red, fancy red, fancy intense red, fancy vivid red, fancy dark red, and fancy deep red. The stronger the hue, the greater the value of the diamond, and the more expensive it will be.

Colored Diamonds Price Guide

While red diamonds are the most expensive diamonds in the world, many other fancy color diamonds are also very valuable. Pink, blue, and green diamonds are also very rare and, therefore, very expensive. Yellow diamonds are the most common (along with brown diamonds) of fancy color diamonds, but they can still be quite valuable depending on their intensity of color. Here is a cost comparison of some of the different fancy color diamonds:

  • Red Diamonds: $1 million per carat
  • Lab-grown red diamonds: $7500-$8000 per carat
  • Pink Diamonds: $50,000-$100,000 per carat
  •  Blue Diamonds: $100,000-$300,000 per carat
  •  Green Diamonds: $100,000-$1 million per carat
  •  Yellow Diamonds: $5,000-$20,000 per carat
